    FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Walden J. “Deacon” Shults, age 85, of Fernandina Beach, died in the early morning hours of April 30, 2014, after a long illness. He was born in Canajoharie, New York, on July 17, 1928, the son of Dr. Jay W. and Jessie (Smith) Shults.

    Deacon is survived by his faithful wife of 46 years, Gail (Aldrich) Shults; his two brothers, Kim (Nancy) Shults, of Crownsville, Maryland, Greg Shults, of Marietta, Georgia; and his five children, son Christian (Danahe Temple) Shults, of Malaysia, and daughters from Vermont Carol Shults-Perkins, of Berlin, Kimberlee (Larry) Clark, of Moretown, Debra (Richard) Anderson, of North Montpelier, and Mary Hickory, of Montpelier. Deacon is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.

    After retiring as a civil engineer with several companies, he formed his own business, The Deacon’s Bench. He was a well-respected, multitalented craftsman and selfless kind gentleman who will be missed by his family and many friends.

    Contributions in memory of Walden Shults may be made to Nassau County Volunteer Center, 1303 Jasmine St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

    A private family memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Vermont.
