White River Junction resident Linda Nordman holds her Spirit of the Red Cross Hero award from the Vermont chapter of the American Red Cross.
When Tropical Storm Irene hit the state in 2011, White River Junction resident Linda Nordman arrived at her local Red Cross shelter and asked how she could help.
The newcomer who’s now Upper Valley disaster action team coordinator hasn’t stopped working since.
That’s why Nordman was one of nine individuals honored Tuesday at the Vermont chapter of the American Red Cross’ inaugural Heroes Award breakfast.
The event, attended by 200 people at South Burlington’s DoubleTree Hotel, recognized volunteers for acts of courage and compassion.
Nordman received the first Chet Briggs Spirit of the Red Cross award, named for the late resident of East Calais who was a volunteer for more than 20 years. He was represented at the event by his widow, Karen Lane.
Brattleboro Fire Department Lt. Martin Rancourt received the Adult Good Samaritan award for finding and saving the life of a friend who, hunting last fall, fell from a tree stand and fractured both legs.
Steve Costello of Green Mountain Power and Terry Jaye of Rutland radio station WJJR were honored for their work organizing their city’s Gift-of-Life Marathon, which collected a national record-breaking 2,350 pints of blood in December.
Other winners included:
Youth Good Samaritan Hero: David Correira, of Groton.
Animal Hero: Lisa Haynes, of Huntington, founder of Save our Strays.
Military Hero: Capt. Zachariah Fike, of Georgia, founder of Purple Hearts Reunited.
First Responder Hero: Vermont State Police Detective Trooper Eric Patno, of Franklin County.
Community Impact Hero: Robert Elder, of Piermont, N.H.
“Our region is fortunate to have remarkable, community-minded people who give so much of themselves,” said Red Cross Regional Executive Larry Crist.
