EAST MONTPELIER — Roger E. Sherman, 84, of Putnam Road, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
Born on Jan. 26, 1930, in Montpelier, he was the son of Elton A. and May (Freeman) Sherman. He was a 1949 graduate of Montpelier High School.
Roger served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was a Korean War veteran who saw active service aboard the destroyer USS Wren.
Prior to his military service, he was employed at Green Mountain Power Electric Co. After his return, he continued to work for GMP for a total of 43 years.
On June 15, 1957, Roger married Anne Vigneault, of Barre, Vt. They made their home in East Montpelier in a house that he constructed with his father and friends. Roger and Anne were married for 56 years.
Roger was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as well as a life member of the Montpelier Benevolent Protectorate of Elks. He served East Montpelier as town deputy sheriff from 1989-1990. He also enjoyed hunting and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife, Anne V. Sherman, of East Montpelier; two sons, Joey Sherman and his wife, Yukie, of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Todd Sherman and his wife, Rochelle, of Cape Coral, Fla.; daughter Heidi Tucci and her husband, Michael, of LaGrangeville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Katrina Sherman, Zachary Sherman, Gianna Tucci, Anneliese Tucci, Neil Tucci, William Sherman and Sam Sherman; a brother, Roderic A. Sherman, and his wife, Martha, of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Robert H. Sherman, of Wisconsin.
Calling hours will be held from noon on Monday, April 28, until the start of the funeral service, which will begin at 1 p.m. at Guare & Sons/Barber & Lanier Funeral Home. Immediately following the funeral service, military honors will be held at the Plainmont Cemetery in East Montpelier.
