I am in support of GMO labeling. In fact, it is interesting to me that there should be so much controversy over something so basic as knowing what is in our food. There is a precedent with kosher foods. They are labeled, and the Jewish population is given a choice when selecting their food.
GMO ingredients are increasingly present in our food, yet the federal Food and Drug Administration doesn’t test for the safety of GMOs; the agency instead relies on tests done by the food industry. If you would like to know about some concerns with GMOs, there are many scientific organizations that will give you more information such as the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Since there is no consensus in the research about the safety of GMOs, and since the federal government has not done any long-term tests to examine the effects on human consumption, I am pleased that our state has decided to seriously look into labeling because of our legislators’ concern for our health. It is just one more way in which Vermont will be living up to its national reputation for high quality food.
