• Vermont’s tallest monument opens for season

    BENNINGTON ó Vermontís Bennington Battle Monument is opening for the season on Saturday, April 19.

    At 306 feet and 417 steps, itís the stateís tallest monument, and has been open to the public since 1891.

    The cornerstone was laid in 1887. It was built to commemorate a pivotal Revolutionary War battle fought there in August 1777.

    From the observation level, visitors can see a view of Vermont, Massachusetts and New York. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 14 and free for children under five. Scheduled school groups can also visit for free.

    The monument is open daily until the end of October.
