BERLIN — Irene Isabelle McCarthy, 93, formerly of Barre, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

She was born July 17, 1920, in Cabot, the daughter of the late Fred R. and Marcia (Smith) Simpson.

She was employed as a midwife for 25 years at Boston Lying-In Hospital. She retired in 1962.

She later moved to Groton, Vt., where she lived with her sister for a few years before relocating to Barre, where she remained until entering the nursing home in Berlin.

Irene enjoyed playing scrabble, knitting, crocheting and gardening.

Survivors include a son, Joseph P. McCarthy, and his wife, Susan, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Lakin, of Middlesex; a grandson, Adam McCarthy, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four siblings: Frederick Simpson, Lillian Darling, Pauline Palermo and Ruth Burnham.

A graveside service will be held later in the spring, in the Durant Cemetery in Lower Cabot.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the United Church of Cabot, PO Box 127, Cabot, VT 05647.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dian R. Holcomb, of Northern Vermont Funeral Service, 60 Elm St., Hardwick.
