EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. — With a song in her heart and a melody on her lips, Joy passed on to the celestial choir Sunday, March 9, 2014.
A resident of East Syracuse, N.Y., she lived in Sterling and Denver, Colo., for 34 years.
She was born May 11, 1942, in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Edward and M. Jeannette Shepard.
Joy graduated from East Syracuse High School in 1960 and received her Bachelor of Science from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, in 1965, and her Master of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado in 1980.
Joy was involved in church music since age 13. She was a music teacher for 21 years, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, a member of the Agonian Sorority, MENC, ACDA, Oasis where she was an accompanist for six years, and the founder of Men of Note.
Joy is survived by her husband, Robert; two sons, Daryn (Dan Saavedra) Bryden, of Long Beach, Calif., and Gregg (Connie) Bryden, of Muscatine, Iowa; stepdaughter Rebecca Retchless, of Syracuse, and stepson Joshua Retchless, of Randolph, Vt.; sister Jeanne (John) Brooks, of Cleveland, Ohio; brothers Joel (Joya) Shepard, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and John (Mary) Shepard, of DeWitt; three grandchildren, Amber, Blake and Gavyn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 106 Chapel St., Fayetteville. Family and friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Education Fund for Bryden Children, c/o Jeanne Brooks, 32352 Legacy Point Parkway, Avon Lake, OH 44012.
