    Support the budget

I am writing to encourage Montpelier residents to vote for the school budget in the April 15 revote.

A second defeat of the school budget will result in cuts that will hurt students. While the proposed budget is only a 1.73 percent increase in spending from last year, it creates an 11.8 percent tax rate increase for Montpelier due to the vagaries of the state education funding system.

We cannot simply cut our way out of this problem. The schools have already cut staff 17 percent as compared to a less than 9 percent decline in students, while Montpelier ranks 123rd for school spending rates statewide.

Instead, frustration must be directed away from the schools and to where it belongs — the state system.

I encourage everyone to support our students and vote for the budget.
