Vt. House advances bill giving docs leeway on LymeMarch 12,2014
MONTPELIER ó The Vermont House has given preliminary approval to a bill giving doctors more flexibility in treating Lyme disease.
The bill would let doctors prescribe long-term antibiotics to patients diagnosed with the tick-borne illness.
Rep. Mike Fisher, chairman of the House Health Care Committee, said that practice currently is not universally accepted. He said there had been fears that doctors prescribing long-term antibiotics could be brought before the state Medical Practice Board on professional conduct charges.
The bill would guarantee no such prosecutions would happen. Fisher said there havenít been any such investigations by the Medical Practice Board but that the legislation is aimed at alleviating fears that could happen.
