Rev. Herman B. Benjamin
SWANTON — The Rev. Herman B. Benjamin, a longtime area resident, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at the Franklin County Rehab Center, with his loving family at his side.
Born in St. Albans Sept. 4, 1943, he was the son of the late Alan W. and Thelma L. (Olmstead) Benjamin. Herm was 70 years old.
In 1961, at the Franklin United Methodist Church, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Lothian, who survives him.
Herm was a 1961 graduate of Franklin High School, a 1988 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, and a 1991 graduate of Wesleyan College of Theology.
Upon graduation from high school he worked with his father in construction and then went on to work for O’Shea Publishing in Enosburgh, the St. Albans Messenger and then Lane Press in Burlington. Herm became a full-time pastor in 1968, serving churches throughout Maine and Vermont, retiring in 2010.
He enjoyed his time with his family at their camp and on their boat, always liked good food, listening to music, reading, writing poetry, a good discussion on politics, and always was known as a gadget guy. He will be remembered most for his good sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sandra, of Swanton; son Curtis L. Benjamin and Melissa Manson, of Fairfield; two daughters, Catherine Papazoni and her husband, Dale, of Franklin, and Leslie Babic and her husband, Corey, of Barre Town; his brother, Gary Benjamin, and his wife, Mary, of Highgate; and his aunt, Marguerite “Peg” Buck, of Cromwell, Conn.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours Friday, March 7, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 S. Main St., St. Albans.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Chapel, with the Rev. Jason McConnell and Pastor Seth Anderson officiating. Interment will be later this spring in the East Franklin Cemetery.
