LAKE ELMORE Gail Ann Putney, 72, of Camp Road, died unexpectedly in Lady Lake, Fla., Feb. 26, 2014, while visiting family and friends.
Born in Barre June 21, 1941, she was the daughter of Harold and Marjorie (Rae) Putney McAvoy.
She attended local schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1959.
Following graduation, Gail went to Washington, D.C., and was employed by the Department of the Navy. In 1962, she joined the staff at the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in Montpelier, working in many capacities and became an underwriter, retiring in 2004.
Her professional memberships included the Vermont Association of Insurance Women, where she had held several offices and in 1976 was elected The Insurance Woman of the Year. In 1982, Gail was recognized as a member of the Certified Professional Insurance Women. Gail was also an active communicant at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Morrisville and a member of the St. Andrew Society of Vermont.
She was an avid bowler, traveling all over the state of Vermont as a tournament bowler, and had bowled in some national tournaments. Gail held many offices in local leagues, had been a state president as well as being instrumental in establishing and teaching in the Junior Bowling League at Twin City Lanes.
Gail treasured her family and enjoyed cooking and baking for them.
Survivors include her sister, Mary McAvoy Suits, and her husband, Ed, of Palatine Bridge, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Wendy McAvoy, of Sudbury, Mass.; and brothers Rae McAvoy and his wife, Val, of New Ringgold, Pa., Patrick McAvoy and his wife, Bobbi, of Ware, Mass., Ronald Putney and his wife, Donna, of Chelsea, Roland Putney and his wife, Linda, of Websterville, Murley Putney and his companion, Pam, of South Barre, and Paul Putney and his wife, Lynn, of Barre City; nieces and nephews; her beloved cat, Tigger; and an aunt, Winifred Martin, of Lebanon, N.H.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Charles McAvoy.
Her committal service and interment will be held in the Elmore Cemetery at a time to be announced next spring.
