GRANITEVILLE, S.C. — The service of honor and celebration of the life of Master Sgt. Curtis Merle Stark, Vermont Army National Guard retired, of Pendulum Ridge, was held Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hersey Road, Berlin, Vt. He died with his wife, Laura, at his bedside at their home there Feb. 24, 2014.

Bishop Daniel Norris conducted the service. David Stonecliffe gave the invocation, and the principal speaker was longtime friend of the Stark family James Walton. Matt Smith delivered the benediction.

Chorister Stonecliffe and organist Debbie Norris led the congregation in the hymns, “How Great Thou Art,” “Nearer My God to Thee” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”

The eulogist was Curtis’ closest friend and longtime military colleague, 1st Sgt. Carl Beattie of the Joint Force Headquarters, Vermont Army National Guard. Also speaking was NASCAR Sprint Cup racing friend Malcolm Warner.

Former brother-in-law Joseph Busath read a tribute from Curtis’ sister, Janis Stark Busath, and several members of the congregation offered remembrances.

A large military uniformed delegation attended from the Vermont Army National Guard and its Joint Force Headquarters, and various support units at Camp Johnson in Colchester, Vt.

Fellowship, a sharing time and luncheon followed in the church cultural hall.

Entombment was made in the Hooker and Whitcomb receiving vault, to await burial with full military honors at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center next spring.
