House inmates at home
The state is looking to balance the budget — who isn’t? The recent union and state tussle prompted me to submit these thoughts.
Jeb Spaulding said: “Look, it’s not easy to find programs where you can generate three-quarters of a million dollars in annual savings.”
Vermont is averaging $11.6 million per year to house inmates out of state, not counting the extra money needed for transportation, salaries and legal expenses for lawyers, judges and other state officials when issues arise.
We need to house our inmates within our own borders, not pass the maintenance buck off to a foreign source.
It’s not fair for all Vermonters, let alone the families of the incarcerated.
The Vermont Corrections Department has been talking facts and figures. Hopefully this subject will be brought up with positive results to bring our inmates home to be supervised by Vermonters, not out-of-staters.
