Robbery suspect turned overFebruary 13,2014
BARRE – A man who allegedly held up a South Main Street convenience store late Wednesday night was arrested by police not far from Spaulding High School following a foot chase, Chief Tim Bombardier confirmed this morning.
According to Bombardier, the man, who he did not name, was carrying a gun at the time of his arrest not far from Spaulding High School. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. he said.
Bombardier said the suspect has been turned over to federal authorities and news accounts that suggest his department confirmed the arrest of the person responsible for a recent string of robberies in central Vermont area were inaccurate.
“Those weren’t my words,” he said.
Bombardier said it was too soon to say whether the man who is now in custody could have committed one or more of the other robberies. He said he would leave that to federal, state and local authorities who are still actively investigating those crimes.
“I’m not going to say if it’s connected or not connected,” he said. “I’m going to give the officers a chance to finish their work.”
Bombardier has said, both publicly and repeatedly, that it is unlikely that all of the robberies – there have now been nine in the greater Barre area since New Year’s Eve – are all related. Though he believes at least two – one on Jan. 19 robbery at Quality Market on Washington and another that occurred barely 48 hours later at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy on South Main Street – were committed by the same person.
Though Bombardier said the man arrested by police Wednesday night was armed, he did not indicate whether the suspect brandished the weapon during the robbery. According to police, that hasn’t happened in any of the earlier cases, including four in Barre, three in Berlin and one in Barre Town.MORE IN This Just In
