Energy projects earn honors
MONTPELIER — Four central Vermont firms have been awarded honors in Efficiency Vermont’s “Best of the Best” competition for the category of top energy efficient renovations and new buildings.
EnergySmart of Vermont, Montpelier Construction, Northern Architects, and Weatherization and Renovation of Montpelier combined to garner five of the 20 awards given out statewide.
EnergySmart of Vermont, based out of Barre, took top honors its renovation of a 1,420-square-foot East Montpelier cape-style home. Through extensive testing, the contractors were able to find the reason for cold rooms and high heating costs that another company’s renovation did not rectify. After finding the problem, EnergySmart was able to implement a solution, cutting the home’s fuel bill by 37 percent.
Montpelier Construction garnered a merit award for its renovation of a 960-square-foot Thistle Hill Pottery studio in Montpelier. Hired because the studio was cold in the winter, Montpelier Construction improved insulation and conducted air sealing, reducing air infiltration by 55 percent and heating fuel costs by 41 percent.
Northern Architects, of Montpelier, was also honored with a merit award for its creative design of an academic facility on the Montpelier campus of the Community College of Vermont. The project featured an added classroom as well and renovations to a group of buildings.
Weatherization and Renovation of Montpelier (WARM) was recognized with two merit awards. WARM was honored for its renovation of a mixed-use, three-story brick structure on Barre Street in Montpelier. The renovation reduced the buildings heating costs by 73 percent and fixed a sizable mold infestation. WARM was also honored for its upgrade of an Essex Junction home.
Given out each year, Efficiency Vermont’s Best of the Best awards “recognize high achievement by architects, engineers, builders, and contractors using energy efficiency and sustainability practices to construct or renovate Vermont buildings.”
