    Hollar tackles tough issues

I only met John Hollar at his campaign kickoff, but I have been following his progress as mayor for the last two years. I think he’s done a good job for Montpelier under difficult circumstances. He’s reduced the growth of the city’s budget yet found ways to move forward on important projects like the downtown biomass heating distribution system recently completed on budget and on time, and the new transit center, finally moving into the project design phase after years of delay. Frankly, I never thought I’d see the day that the “Carr Lot” would begin to transform from an eyesore to a community asset, and I can’t wait to attend next month’s public meeting on design options.

What I most appreciate about Mayor Hollar, though, is his willingness to speak frankly, to take on difficult issues, and to make tough decisions when they are needed.

Incumbents all too often take the easy course when it comes to issues that can be controversial with voters. John Hollar is that rare, unflappable individual who will wade right in, make a reasoned assessment, formulate an appropriate response, and articulate a clear and compelling rationale for doing what he believes is in the best interests of our city and its residents. Service to community, and not re-election to office, is his primary goal.

This quality of civic-minded determination, alone, would get my vote. I hope you will give him your full consideration, and your vote, on March 4.
