Vt. seeks federal help for ice storm
MONTPELIER — The state is asking for help from the federal government in fixing damage caused by an ice storm that cut power to tens of thousands of electric customers.
Gov. Peter Shumlin requested the federal disaster declaration Friday for damage to public infrastructure from last month’s ice storm in Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille and Orleans counties.
If granted, a public assistance disaster declaration would allow communities and public utilities in those counties to receive at least 75 percent reimbursement for debris removal and repairs to the power grid, public roads, bridges and other infrastructure that was damaged during the storm.
Almost 40,000 Vermont electric customers across the northern part of the state lost power in the storm that hit Dec. 22.MORE IN This Just InReward is offered Full Story
