WATERBURY — Grace Elizabeth “Bette” Morse, 79, passed away in the comfort of her family at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vt., on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013. Born on Verona Island, Maine, on May 12, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Mary F. (Eaton) White. On Dec. 28, 1985, she married Leslie M. “Skipper” Morse in Bucksport, Maine.
Bette graduated from high school in 1952 and then went on to work as a waitress at the Jed Prouty Tavern in Maine and then later at Camp Meade in Middlesex, Vt. All who met her admired her love for people.
Bette’s true passion in life was the love of her family. The closeness of family was seen and felt by anyone who knew her. Throughout the years, Bette enjoyed teaching Sunday school, bowling, ceramics, playing cards with family and friends, Sudoku and word search puzzles. The time and events with friends at the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens center would always bring a smile to her face. Her cards and letters sent to many, never forgetting anyone, was a gift treasured by those who received them. She savored the years as a snowbird traveling to Florida for the winter, spending time with family and making lifelong friends.
Bette is survived by her husband of 28 years, Skipper Morse of Waterbury; her children, William Walters and his wife Cheryl of Bucksport, Maine, Herbert Walters of Bucksport, Maine, Mary Taylor and her husband Jim of Carterville, Ill., and Anita Kirkland of Crestview, Fla., Melinda Sargent and her husband Gary of West Bend, Wis., Steven Morse and his wife Esta of Springfield, Vt., Stanley Morse and his companion Patricia Senzel of South Burlington, Vt., Mark Morse of Ascutney, Vt., and Michael Morse of Chester, Vt.; her grandchildren, Charles Walters, Darci Schafer, Justin Herren and his wife Julie, Ashlee Kirkland, Daniel Kirkland, Eric Sargent and his wife Monica, Christopher Sargent and his wife Megan, Stormie, Ashley, Autumn, Ciana, Brandy, Karligash, Anthony, Joanna, Chad, Madeline, Harrison, Stefan and Bailey; her great-grandchildren, Kasidy Schafer, Kharmen Ella-May Herren, Flynn Sargent and Emily Sargent; two sisters, Doris M. Grant of Warren, Maine, and Mary Beth Dumont and her husband Mike of China, Maine; her brother, Frank E. White of Claremont, Calif.; her special cousin, Myrtle Pendleton of Orland, Maine; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Bette was predeceased by two sons, Daniel Walters and David Walters.
A service celebrating the life of Bette Morse will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury, Vt., on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. In addition, services will be held in Bucksport, Maine, at a date and time to be announced. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens Center, 14 Stowe St., Waterbury, VT 05676; or to the Bucksport Area Senior Citizens Center, 125 Broadway, Bucksport, ME 04416.
