BENNINGTON ó A Pownal man agreed to pay a fine of more than $700 for bringing a deer he killed in Hoosick, N.Y., into Vermont in November.
Gregorio F. Messina, 28, pleaded guilty Monday in Bennington criminal court after being cited for importing a wild animal without a permit. Messina was ordered to pay a fine of $716.
In an affidavit, Sgt. Travis Buttle, a state game warden, said he was sent to Messinaís home after police got a complaint that several shots had been fired from his home around 8 p.m. Nov. 25.
Buttle said he saw a deer hanging from the back deck.
Messina admitted shooting off his back deck at some targets, Buttle said. When asked about the deer carcass, he said he had shot it Nov. 23 in Hoosick, near the Bennington Battlefield, Buttle said.
