Pownal man to pay $700 for importing deer from NY
BENNINGTON — A Pownal man agreed to pay a fine of more than $700 for bringing a deer he killed in Hoosick, N.Y., into Vermont in November.
Gregorio F. Messina, 28, pleaded guilty Monday in Bennington criminal court after being cited for importing a wild animal without a permit. Messina was ordered to pay a fine of $716.
In an affidavit, Sgt. Travis Buttle, a state game warden, said he was sent to Messina’s home after police got a complaint that several shots had been fired from his home around 8 p.m. Nov. 25.
Buttle said he saw a deer hanging from the back deck.
Messina admitted shooting off his back deck at some targets, Buttle said. When asked about the deer carcass, he said he had shot it Nov. 23 in Hoosick, near the Bennington Battlefield, Buttle said.
“I asked him if he was aware of the regulations for importing deer from (New York) and he advised that he was not. I explained to him the regulations related to importing deer from (chronic wasting disease) states,” Buttle said.MORE IN This Just InWASHINGTON — Two senior Islamic State group leaders were killed in U.S. Full StoryVATICAN CITY — Pope Francis rightly got credit for helping bring the U.S. Full StoryMAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Islamic extremists killed 35 people and kidnapped at least 185 in an attack...
