    Misrepresenting Rockwell

Where in the world does Deborah Solomon get off questioning Norman Rockwell’s sexual orientation? “American Mirror” is her biography of Rockwell that brings up questions of his sexual tendencies which the family calls reckless and unfounded claims. Ms. Solomon appears to be a critic of Rockwell, and in her book she depicts him as having inappropriate sexual tendencies toward men and children. She admits she has no proof that he ever engaged in any sexual abuse or homosexual behavior, though. This apparent homophobic attitude is not welcomed or shared by the gay community.

Was Rosie the Riveter a sexual picture? The 1943 painting by Norman Rockwell shows a woman holding a rivet gun on her lap, and some suggest this too was sexual. Rockwell drew pictures of young boys and most everyday Americans. Some were neighbors’ kids. He was never accused of any inappropriate behavior.

Until she has some real and factual info on Rockwell’s supposed sexual behavior it’s best that Ms. Solomon keep her thoughts to herself and not in print. That’s my review of her book. We can be critics, too.
