MARLBORO — A gift shop sustained extensive damage when a car crashed into it Friday evening.

Vermont State Police said Frederick Bump, 67, of Brattleboro was driving a 2013 Subaru XV east on Route 9 around 9:45 p.m. when he lost control in the slush.

Bump crashed into the exterior wall of the Hogback Mountain Gift Shop at an angle, according to Trooper Ryan Wood. The car knocked down a 15-foot section of the store’s exterior wall and destroyed a large amount of merchandise inside the store.

Bump was not injured but the car was destroyed, Wood said.

Store owner Ed Metcalfe said Saturday he was dealing with a “sticky, runny mess of jams, wines, maple syrup and pancake mix.”

The most damage was done to a wall where Vermont wines were displayed, Metcalfe said, along with 200 to 300 jars of jams and jellies. The crash knocked those items into a display of maple syrup, he said.

Metcalfe said the crash didn’t close the store, but he might close on Sunday because of the expected storm.

The area of Route 9 where the gift shop is located has a bad curve so vehicle crashes aren’t unusual, Metcalfe said. He said his building has been hit about three times since he became involved with the business in 2002.

Because the accident happened at night, when the store was closed, no employees or customers were hurt, Metcalfe said.
