EAST BARRE — Stephen lost his battle to cancer on Dec. 5, 2013, surrounded by his family at The Cancer Treatment Center in Philadelphia, Pa. He was courageous throughout his illness and never gave up hope. As he would pray for strength and support along his journey, he would also ask that his family and others facing the battle against cancer, along with those providing medical care and support, be given the same.

Stephen was the son of Stephen E. Kelty Sr. and Betsy (Whalen) Kelty. He was born Nov. 29, 1958, in Barre, Vt. He attended grade school in Barre Town and was a graduate of Spaulding High School, class of 1977. He worked for the state of Vermont Buildings and General Services Department for over 20 years. His first position was in the postal section, print shop and later as supervisor for the record center in Middlesex. He later worked for the Agency of Transportation as a customer service specialist until illness caused him to take a leave of absence in December of 2012.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. He enjoyed spending time with family, as well as being on the beach. He enjoyed watching his Philadelphia Eagles play football and listening to country music, but there was nothing more that Stephen enjoyed than the Christmas season and watching the first snow fall. He was lovingly known as Mr. Christmas or the Scotch Pine Man. Some of his fondest memories were the times spent with his children as they would snowmobile during the winter. In the summer, he would love to have cookouts and invite the family so all could share. He enjoyed cooking and baking his “famous holiday pies.” Another specialty of his was making his peanut butter fudge for the kids. For all that Stephen did and who he was, his family was his heart and center.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Deborah J. (Jones) Kelty. He leaves his parents, as well as his sisters, Sandra J. Leopold, of Greenville, S.C., and her husband, Paul, also Sheila M. Bell, of Barre, Vt., and her husband, Michael Sr. He is survived by his children, Amber L. Gartner and husband Lance, Stephen E. Kelty III and wife Kathy, Jaszmyn Kelty and companion Steven Moreau; and his stepchildren, Shannon N. McKinstry and Ashley C. McKinstry and fiance Dustin Scavitto. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brianne, Alliyah, Lance Jr. “LJ” and Rayne Gartner, Olivia Moreau; and step-grandchildren, Morgan Haskins, Brooklyn Stevens and Wyatt Jones. He also leaves behind several aunts and uncles, along with several nieces and nephews and cousins. He is also survived by the people whose lives he touched throughout his special lifetime. He had a very special bond with his cousin Earlwin “Chuck” Kelty II.

An informal celebration of Stephen’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at Guare and Sons Funeral Home on School Street in Montpelier, Vt. Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. with the service beginning at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Stephen’s name. Burial will be in the spring in the Williamstown Village Cemetery at the discretion of his family.
