    Taking the hard line

I read an interesting article complaining about sending prisoners out of state to private corrections facilities. The organization gives numbers of how much it costs us but no comparison numbers. When in-state costs were heading toward $50,000 per prisoner we were by far the most expensive in the nation. Presently, we are more than $56,000 per in-state prisoner compared with about half that for sending prisoners to Kentucky.

A little ironic that Vermont ranks last or near the bottom in per-capita support of higher education and yet could send the entire in-state prison population to Ivy League schools.

I am one taxpayer who thinks sending the prison population to Kentucky would be a good option and put the savings into supporting our productive students struggling to get a higher education. If you don’t like the prison system, don’t break the law.
