• Near-collision causes crash

    WASHINGTON — A Williamstown man who reportedly swerved to avoid an oncoming car before slamming his pickup truck into a tree early Sunday evening was not seriously hurt.

    According to state police, Leo Williams, 60, was traveling west on Williamstown Road shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday when an eastbound car crossed the center line, prompting him to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.

    Williams’ vehicle, a 2000 Ford Ranger, went off the south side of the icy road and crashed into a tree, they said.

    Rescue personnel went to the scene, according to police, who said Williams was checked for injuries and opted not to be taken to a hospital.

    According to police, the second vehicle, described as a “smaller blue sedan,” did not stop and was not located.
