MONTPELIER — Joy Crutchfield Vissering passed away November 22, 2013. She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
The only child of Dora Hope and David Crutchfield, Joy was born in New York City. As a child, she lived in New York, England and briefly in North Carolina. She attended Barnard College (class of 1936) where she majored in sciences and mathematics. She was later able to briefly indulge her love of astronomy by working in the astronomy lab at Columbia University.
Her parents moved to Stowe, Vermont, and needed her driving skills there to assist them. In Stowe, she met her future husband, William “Viss” Vissering, from whom she took a photography course. He was renovating an old house to serve as a guest house and ski lodge. They were married in 1944 and together ran High Hills, their guest house. Joy cooked endless meals and made endless beds, in addition to raising her two children. In 1968, she and Viss retired in Amherst, Mass.
Joy was a talented rug hooker and made many beautiful rugs until “hooker’s elbow” got the better of her. She also did beautiful needlepoint and sewed many of her own clothes. She enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble and doing the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. Joy also loved to travel and, later in her life, made trips all over the world.
At 92, she moved into the Gary Home in Montpelier, where she spent six good years. A year and a half ago, Joy moved to the Mayo Health Center in Northfield, and received excellent care until her death.
In addition to her two children, Jean Vissering and William David Vissering of East Montpelier and Moretown, respectively, Joy is survived by four grandchildren, Nathan Klein, Suzannah Klein, Sia Vissering and Galen Vissering.
There will be no calling hours. Services are private. Contributions may be made to the Mayo Healthcare Nursing Home, 71 Richardson Street, Northfield, VT 05663.MORE IN ObituariesMONTPELIER — Kenneth Michael Hickey, 72, of Granby, Connecticut, beloved husband for 41 years of...
