LOWELL — Crews are planning to remove a wind turbine blade on Vermont’s Lowell Mountain so it can be repaired after it was hit by lightning.

A crane will be brought to the mountain so the blade can be lowered to the ground and repaired.

After it is fixed it will be re-installed on the turbine that’s part of the 21-turbine Kingdom Community Wind complex.

The Caledonian Record is reports the blade will remain on the ground over the Thanksgiving holiday while the new finish on the blade cures. It will then be reinstalled on the tower.

The turbines have a lightning protection system and GMP spokeswoman Dorothy Schnure says that without that system, the utility would have had to replace the blade.
