WATERBURY — Cornie M. Hough, 97, passed away in the comfort of her family at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013.
Born in Mooers, N.Y., on Jan. 30, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Elizabeth (Duprey) Abare.
On Sept. 21, 1935, she married Henry C. Hough in Waterbury. Henry predeceased Cornie on Feb. 3, 1981.
Cornie was a 1934 graduate of Waterbury High School and, following her marriage, was happy and busy as a homemaker and raising her family. At the age of 42, Cornie became a licensed practical nurse and received her driver’s license. She was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, and then later worked in nursing homes in Montpelier, as well as a private-duty nurse.
A woman of deep and devoted faith, Cornie was a 95-year member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury, Court St. Theresa 551 Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and the St. Andrew Altar Society.
Her other memberships included Waterbury Grange 237, a 42-year member of the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Auxiliary Unit 59, a 37-year member of the Montpelier VFW Auxiliary, as well as the 8 and 40, and the Waterbury Historical Society.
In her leisure time she enjoyed traveling, cooking, jigsaw puzzles, playing Scrabble, crocheting and watching movies, particularly horror and Westerns.
Cornie was particularly proud that her first language was French, and had to be taught English when she began school.
Cornie is survived by her children, Carolyn Earle, of Eden, Edwin Hough and his wife, Andrea, of Northfield, Charles Hough and his wife, Brenda, of Waterbury, and Linda Kaiser, of Waterbury; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Abare, of Morrisville, and Robert Abare, of Moretown; two sisters, Marie Carri, of Tennessee, and Grace Lee, of Rutland; her sister-in-law, Helen Abare, of Alaska; her special friends, Peter and Sandra LaFlamme and their children, Kevin and Julie; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Cornie was predeceased by a son, Clifton Hough; a great-grandson, Dana Byrd; her son-in-law, Donald Kaiser; as well as siblings Ruby Dalley, Dorothy Green, Jerome Abare, Clara Pratt, Omeline Morin, Frederick Abare and Pauline Abare.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at 10 a.m., with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Monday evening, Nov. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will take place in the Waterbury Center Cemetery.
