St. ALBANS — Mr. Thomas Dominic Joseph Volatile, age 91, passed away peacefully November 15, 2013, surrounded by his loving family at Northwestern Medical Center.
He was born in Johnston, R.I., February 26, 1922, son of the late Joseph and Carmella (Biancarriello) Volatile. Tom served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was especially proud to serve under General Patton and in five major European campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge.
In 1950, Tom married Beverly Merrill who predeceased him in 1976. He married Ann Boardman August 5, 1977.
Tom worked at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and owned What Cheer Catering Service and the Meadowbrook Restaurant. Tom came to Norwich University in 1966 from Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia where he had been food service manager. At Norwich and Vermont College, he managed the university’s food service. He was awarded the Board of Fellows Outstanding Service Medallion. He was cited for his outstanding contributions to the satisfaction and the morale of the Corps of Cadets and also for his “long mission of service to the community.” Tom brought great joy to others by constructing elaborate gingerbread houses every Christmas for the benefit of various charities.
Tom was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Northfield, Vt., the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hyde Park, and the American Legion in Johnson. He was a Free and Accepted Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite.
Tom is survived by his wife, Ann; his children, Linda Cramer of Swanton, Nancy Volatile-Wood and her husband Craig of Georgia, Vt.; and his stepchildren, Tim Newbrough and his wife Karen of Terrell, Texas, Greg Newbrough and his wife Carol of Poway, Calif., Ruth Butts and her husband David of Milton, and Kathy Newbrough and her husband Steve Kirby of Underhill; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 21, 2013, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Northfield at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northwestern Medical Center Auxiliary, 133 Fairfield St., St. Albans, VT 05478.
