BURLINGTON — Officials with a Burlington church say the removal of a fire-damaged steeple isn’t expected to begin until later in the week.

The removal of the potentially dangerous loose slate tiles on the landmark church was ongoing Monday.

Bill Harwood of the College Street Congregational Church says contractors are juggling the sometimes competing factors of historic preservation, safety and cost.

The church was damaged last week in an early morning fire. A suspect has pleaded not guilty to arson charges.

Officials say the church can be repaired.

On Sunday the congregation met at the First Congregational Church in Burlington.
