RUPERT — A Manchester man died following an all-terrain vehicle accident Sunday morning.

According to state police, 76-year-old Maurice Thompson died after an ATV landed on top of him. Police said Thompson was helping his son, Michael Thompson, of East Dorset, move a deer he had killed on a mountain ridge.

Police said Maurice Thompson’s 2008 Polaris ATV had become hung up on a log, and in the process of freeing the vehicle, it accelerated suddenly and threw him. Thompson landed on top of a log and the ATV landed on his back, police said.

Michael Thompson successfully performed CPR and revived his father, police said, Emergency personnel worked to get Maurice Thompson out of the woods and provide medical assistance.

While receiving assistance, Maurice Thompson again lost consciousness and showed no signs of life. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
