Reassess ledge work
The ledge removal work being done on Montpelier’s entrance to Interstate 89 seems ridiculously expensive for a small reduction in risk. I question how, in a time of tight budgets, $1.5 million for this kind of work ever got the thumbs up.
It seems to me other projects would have a much greater impact on saving lives. How about repaving more of the many miles of I-89 that are rutted by studded snow tires — a hydroplaning hazard in rain, as regular accidents prove? Or how about investing more in state police patrols to reduce the speeding that is endemic on the interstate? Maybe we should up funding for driver’s education programs?
I know falling ledges do, in fact, pose a risk, and I know I’d hate to be the one to get hit on the head by a falling rock, but I have to wonder how significant that risk may be. How many injuries and accidents have actually been caused by falling rock? The implication of your recent story about this project suggests even more of this type of work will be done.
Given the many other priorities of our transportation system, I’d ask all involved to reassess the value ledge removal really has.
