• Vt town to close deal to sell abandoned house
     | September 14,2013

ST. JOHNSBURY — The town is getting ready to close a deal to sell a dilapidated vacant house for $1 so it can be demolished and a new house built on the site.

St. Johnsbury is planning to close on the sale of the St. Mary Street house later this month.

The town took possession of the property after it failed to sell at a tax sale.

The Burlington-based Vermont Housing Finance Agency is going to buy the property, demolish the house, build an affordable single-family house, and sell it.

Town officials say the program is a viable way for the community to add to its tax rolls and erase an eyesore.
