BARRE ó A Berlin man has been charged with helping a man break into the Subway in Northfield where he worked and helped steal a little more than $3,000.

Andrew J. Dow, 20, pleaded not guilty to burglary and grand larceny, both felonies, in Washington County criminal court on Thursday. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a $6,000 fine.

According to the police affidavit, on Sept. 2, 2012, Dow closed the restaurant. Later that night, police say he and another man, who has not been charged, drove back to the store. Dow gave the man his keys, and the man went into Subway to the unlocked safe and took $3,238 in cash, according to the affidavit.

After reviewing the security camera footage, police say a man dressed in a red hooded sweatshirt enters the store through the front door around 4 a.m., walks behind the deli counter, crawls immediately to the safe, takes the money and then leaves.

The owner of the restaurant, Chris Atherton, told police that the safe was normally left unlocked and ajar because the combination is ďtricky.Ē

Police say Dow bragged to people about the burglary, and police obtained text messages between Dow and a woman where he says he robbed the restaurant of $3,000.

When interviewed by police, Dow admitted to helping with the burglary, but said he was pressured by the other man to do it.

Also on that night, Dow said he and the man tried unsuccessfully to break into the Simply Subs II in Berlin and broke into the Gray Building in Northfield, but did not take anything. After the burglary, Dow said the other man took off his red hooded sweatshirt and threw it out the window while driving on Route 64.

Police say Dow and the other man split the stolen money up evenly and Dow used the money to buy a cellphone and a tablet computer.
