    Doris C. Macdonald Rites

BARRE CITY — The service of remembrance and life celebration for Doris Christie Macdonald of Lincoln House, and church organist for half a century, was held in her church, the First Presbyterian Church of Barre, on Thursday, August 29, 2013, at 11 a.m. She died August 23, 2013, at the Rowan Court Health and Rehab Center.

The Rev Carl Hilton-Van Osdall, pastor of the church, led the service, assisted by the Rev. Gina Hilton Van Osdall, who read from Scripture and offered reflections. Organist Alison Cheroff accompanied the chancel choir of past and present members in the hymns, “The 23rd Psalm,” “Abide With Me,” “Come, Labor On,” and the benediction response, “The Lord Bless You And Keep You,” all under the direction of choir director Peg Lawson.

She also accompanied soloist Nora Zablow in the special selection “If Thou Art Near.”

Numerous members of the congregation offered words of remembrance.

Fellowship and luncheon followed in the church dining room that was arranged by the Elwood Club of which Doris was longtime member.

The interment service preceded at the Walker-Macdonald family lot in the Hope Cemetery where the Rev. Hilton-Van Osdall read the committal prayers. Her cousin, George Walker, was the honorary bearer. The active bearers were nephews Douglas Macdonald and Michael Abare, grandnephew Michael Fadden, cousin James Walker and longtime family friends, James Taylor and Bruce Judd.

Bagpiper and cousin, H. Alan Walker, played “Going Home” and other Scottish airs at the cemetery and church to honor Doris’ love and pride in her Scottish heritage.

The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre, was in charge of the arrangements.
