    WHITE PLAINS, Md. — Kenneth Robert Wheeler, age 92, passed away on Aug. 20, 2013, in Maryland, where he was residing with family members.

    He was a native son of Vermont, born in Lyndonville, to Truman and Hazel Wheeler, and raised in Lyndonville and West Burke.

    After graduating from Lyndon Institute in 1938, Ken joined the armed forces and became a pilot. He was an officer and a patriot who served his country honorably during times of war and peace for the next 30 years, retiring from active duty in the United States Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 1970. He then returned to college, earned a bachelor’s degree, and became a nationally recognized senior athlete who held leadership positions in several organizations and competed in numerous senior athletic events until he was in his 80s.

    Ken is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Patricia Jean Domey Wheeler, originally from Newport, Vt.; his son Kenneth Robert Wheeler Jr. and family; his daughter, Kathryn Jean Wheeler Manuel, and family; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and extended family members throughout New England and across the nation. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Philip Alan Wheeler; his brother, Richard A. Wheeler; and his sister, Dorothy M. Lorinovich Kirn.

    A hero to all who knew him, Ken’s legacy is proof that you can live a decent and pure life in the midst of daunting challenges. His devoted family proudly honors his distinguished life and will miss him immensely for the duration of their lives.
