BRATTLEBORO - A man has been sentenced 25 years to life in prison after a Vermont jury found him guilty of repeated sexual assaults on a young girl.

David Edson, who was sentenced Friday, was convicted earlier this year of two counts of aggravated sexual assault.

The victim was 10 at the time of the assaults and reported them two years later. She testified that the assaults took place in the summer of 2009 in Westminster.

The Brattleboro Reformer reported that defense attorney David Sleigh argued for a much lighter jail term of 10 to 25 years for the 29-year-old Edson. That touched off a debate over whether Edson was facing a mandatory maximum sentence of life in prison.

After taking two recesses to conduct research, the judge ruled against the defense.
