BARRE — A Berlin teen is facing charges after allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Kevin A. Taft, 18, pleaded not guilty in Washington County criminal court Thursday to felony lewd and lascivious conduct with a child and furnishing alcohol to a minor. If convicted he faces a maximum sentence of 17 years and a $7,000 fine.

According to the Vermont State Police affidavit, Taft met the girl while they were attending U-32 High School. State police say the girl would sneak out of her parents’ home in May and June and would be picked up by Taft in his truck. The two would then either go back to Taft’s home or to his parents’ camp on Lake Elmore.

On one occasion, state police say, Taft gave the girl a beer and during at least one tryst the two had intercourse, although the exact date was not specified.

Police say Taft admitted to the acts, as well as giving the girl a “Plan B” contraceptive pill the day after they had sex.

He was released without bail Thursday.
