Tiny town claims highest tax increase
VICTORY ó Residents of the tiny Northeast Kingdom town of Victory are rebelling against what a town official says is the largest property tax increase in the state.
More than a quarter of the town of fewer than 100 residents turned out at the town offices recently to protest the tax increase that caused some taxes to more than double.
The increase was reportedly caused by plans to build a new town clerkís office and community meeting room, as well as a spike in school costs.
Resident Carol Easter says she doesnít know where sheís going to get the $3,400 for her taxes. Last year her taxes were $1,648.
Town officials are checking to see if they can rescind spending plans approved in March.MORE IN This Just InThe U.S. Agency for International Development has awarded the U.S. Full Story
