• ON THE ROAD: Bridge work, paving continue to slow drivers
    August 19,2013

We have now reached week number 20 of “On the Road” reports.

This week we are happy to report we are very close to opening the Long Bridge in Newport. You can check out the latest photographs on the VTrans Facebook page. This week will also wrap up the Route 12 paving project in Northfield, Randolph and Bethel.

The District heating project in Montpelier, meanwhile, will continue to have an impact on traffic on State, East State and Elm streets. Street closures this week include part of Elm Street. Lane reductions should be expected on School Street and Main Street.

Elsewhere, let’s look at the interstate system starting with I-89. Four bridge projects will impact traffic this week. Bridge work on I-89 in Swanton, Saint Albans, Milton and Brookfield will cause lane reductions and slower speed limits through the work zones.

Also four projects will affect traffic on I-91 this week. Starting in Barton, a paving project in the southbound lane runs all the way to Lyndon. Drivers should expect lane closures and speed restrictions.

Paving on I-91 from Newbury to Saint Johnsbury is still ongoing. Lane restrictions and speed reductions are in place throughout the work zone.

I-91 in Windsor has a major bridge project that crosses southbound traffic into the northbound lane. A speed reduction is in place in this work zone.

In Brattleboro, several paving projects will affect traffic north and southbound on I-91. Drivers should expect lane restrictions and speed reductions throughout the work zones. Please plan on delays during afternoon commuting hours.

Looking at the rest of the state, we go first to Route 242 where road construction is causing lane closures and short delays between Montgomery and Westfield.

Route 108 in Cambridge has a paving project that extends to Bakersfield. Delays and lane closures should be expected in this work zone.

On Route 128 between Westford and Essex, paving continues this week. This is causing delays during commuting hours both morning and afternoon.

Route 100 has two projects affecting traffic. Between Waitsfield and Warren drivers will encounter a paving project causing speed reduction and alternating lane closures. Farther down Route 100 in Granville, drivers should expect rough surfaces requiring a reduction in speed.

Route 100 in Killington has a portable traffic signal installed for a bridge project.

Route 25 in Bradford has a paving project nearing completion. Route 113 in Vershire is also nearing completion. Route 125 in Hancock has a bridge project that slows traffic to 15 mph.

Route 14 in Hartford will be reduced to one lane for bridge repair. Expect delays in this work zone.

Route 4 in Mendon has a construction project going on. Drivers are advised to expect delays in this work zone.

Vermont 106 in Woodstock has bridge work that requires a portable traffic light and lane restrictions. Drivers are asked to be very cautious in the work zone.

Route 103 in Clarendon is being relocated and repaved as part of the Rutland Safety Area Project at the airport.

Route 131 in Weathersfield has a paving project all the way to the New Hampshire border. Expect one-way traffic and delays in this work zone.

Route 30 in Jamaica has sign work going on. Short delays have been reported.

Vermont Route 8 has two projects that will slow traffic. A sign replacement project and the installation of a new box culvert will reduce traffic to one lane.

Remember to slow down, pay attention in the work zone and focus on safety. Happy motoring.

Brent H. Curtis is the public outreach coordinator for the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
