BARRE — Shirley L. Papineau, 79, of Bolster Avenue, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at her home surrounded by family and friends.
Born on Nov. 20, 1933, in Hardwick, she was the daughter of Vernon and Iva (Fisher) Powers.
She attended school in Woodbury.
On March 26, 1960, Shirley married Raymond G. Papineau in Hardwick. Following their marriage, they lived in North Montpelier before moving to Montpelier in 1964. From 1981, they made their home in Barre.
In early years, she first worked at the North Montpelier Woolen Mill. For many years afterward, Shirley worked as a cashier in the cafeterias of the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, for the Vermont Department of Employment and Training, and for Montpelier High School.
Throughout her life, she has acquired many friends who she held very dear to her heart. Her family was her pride and joy. She loved to spend as much time with them as she could. She enjoyed family vacations, gatherings and all holidays.
Shirley was an avid bingo player. She enjoyed cooking, knitting and watching QVC, game shows, and the “soaps” on television. She was also an enthusiastic Boston Bruins and Red Sox fan and watched their games as often as she could.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Papineau, of Barre; her children, Paula Winter and her husband, Jon, Michael Papineau and his wife, Linda, Lynn Richards, and Gerald Papineau and his wife, Amy; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth “Toots” Douglas; a brother, Manville Powers; a sister-in-law, Peg Powers; many nieces and nephews; also her extended family, Nanita “Tiny” Lafont, Randy Stebbins, and Carole and Don Fontana.
She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Earl Powers, Walt Powers, June Brown and Wanda Besaw.
Her funeral service and celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ, 115 Main St. in Montpelier. Following the service, a time of fellowship and refreshments will take place in the church fellowship hall.
Family and friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.
