WATERBURY CENTER — Galen Earl Mudgett Sr., 90, of Ripley Road passed away peacefully while picking blueberries in Elmore on Thursday, July 25, 2013. Born in Randolph on October 24, 1922, he was the son of the late Mark and Ursula (Huntoon) Mudgett. On September 18, 1942, he married the former Hazel Bicknell in Tunbridge. Hazel passed away on December 9, 1994. Galen met Martha Pearl and they were married on May 11, 1996, in Waterbury.
Galen was a 1940 graduate of South Royalton High School and then continued his education at the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph, graduating in 1941. For the next 35 years, Galen practiced the vocation that he loved, owning and operating his dairy farm in Sharon. Following, Galen was employed by Central Vermont Railroad as a yard manager and then retired in 1992 from Green Mountain Container Co. where he designed boxes for a variety of applications. He had made his home in Waterbury Center since.
Galen served the community of Sharon as a school director for nine years, a selectman for nine years, moderator for town meeting for 11 years, as well as fence viewer, justice of the peace and was the last state representative for the Town of Sharon in 1965. In addition to his civic service, Galen was a member and past master of the Sharon Lodge #105 F&AM, the Forest-Unity Chapter #82 OES, the Windsor County Farm Bureau, Eastern States Farmers Exchange and Agway. His other memberships included the White River Grange, the Sharon Congregational Church and, while living in Waterbury Center, he attended the Waterbury Congregational Church and most recently, the Green Mountain Community Alliance Church in Duxbury.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening, camping with his camper, especially with his friends in the Good Sam’s Club, furniture restoration and re-caning. In earlier years, he enjoyed playing trumpet with the town bands in Randolph and South Royalton.
Galen is survived by his wife, Martha Pearl Mudgett of Waterbury Center; his children, Galen E. Mudgett Jr. and his friend, James Sheehan, of Sharon, Sandra Whitney and her husband, Merrill, of Chelsea, Ruth Roy and her husband, Dr. David Roy, of Hyde Park, Lois Hayworth of Scarborough, Maine, and Lola Noyes and her husband, Dan, of Waterbury Center; 13 grandchildren, Mark Whitney and his wife, Jessica, Rebecca Roy, Christopher Noyes and his wife, Rebecca, Sonya Roberge and her husband, Tim, Erin Longchamp and her husband, Chris, Andrew Roy, Emily Hayworth and her fiancé, Robert Dombrowski, Matthew Roy, Steven Hayworth, Katelyn Liptack and her husband, Daniel, Alyssa Pearl, Nicole Pearl and Christine Pearl; six great-grandchildren, Shawn Bartney-Whitney, Matthew Whitney, John Roberge, James Roberge, Kassidy Noyes and Zoe Longchamp; a sister, Glendine Piper of Sharon; a brother, Merl Mudgett and his wife, Phyllis, of Bell, Fla.; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Galen was predeceased by two brothers, Jack and Solan Mudgett; a sister, Lucille Penrod; and a son-in-law, Steven Hayworth.
Memorial services will be held from the Green Mountain Community Alliance Church in Duxbury on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Inurnment will take place in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sharon.
