After graduating from Spaulding High School in Barre (1954), Emily attended Jackson College at Tufts (Bachelor of Arts 1959) and then Duke University (Master of Arts 1961).
Emily returned to the Boston area where she worked as a French teacher at Lincoln-Sudbury schools, and later as a copy editor for Addison-Wesley, while married to her first husband, William C. Springer. She moved to Stow, Mass., when she remarried in 1977, and to Lunenburg in 1985.
Together with her husband Jega, she enjoyed classical music, Scrabble, bird-watching and travel. She was also an avid amateur pianist, a research genealogist for the Pearlstein and Wheeler lineages, and a book club enthusiast.
