BARRE — Riding around on bikes, uniformed in black and yellow, “the bike police” have added another element to Barre’s Police Department.
Made up mostly of college students, the bike police are assigned to monitor the streets of Barre.
“Our purpose is basically to patrol the area and if we see something we call it in, so we supplement the officers that way. We also register bikes and check places where people commonly trespass,” said Josiah Caputo, a member of the bike team. “Also if a police officer needs someone to do traffic control to free them up so they can do another job or something like that, we do that, too.”
The five bike police members don’t have the authority to issue tickets or make arrests. Instead they serve as an extra set of eyes for the Police Department, as well as a helpful resource for people in downtown Barre.
“They are also there to help visitors in the city and give directions and things of that nature,” said Barre Police Officer John Mott.
“Vermont is kind of convoluted. Straight roads go in different directions. Basically this is a community outreach program to assist the citizens in downtown Barre.”
The bike police job runs through the summer. All five members are paid employees of the Barre City Police Department.
