SOUTH BURLINGTON— Firefighters say four people were able to escape from a house fire in South Burlington, Vt.

The four had been sleeping at the time. Firefighters got the call to respond at about 2:35 a.m. Monday. One of the occupants suffered a minor injury.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire within 30 minutes. They believe it started when smoking material discarded in a plastic, five-gallon bucket began to burn. The fire spread to nearby furnishings, then onto a three-season porch at the rear of the building. They said the fire caused about $150,000 in damage.
Vinyl siding melted on a neighboring house.
