ST. JOHNSBURY — Construction is expected to start on the long-awaited Lamoille Valley Rail Trail.

The rail trail will eventually run 93 miles between Swanton and St. Johnsbury along a former railroad right of way

U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders was in St. Johnsbury on Friday evening for the groundbreaking event.

The independent senator secured a $5.2 million grant for the trail in 2005. But it wasn’t until last fall that the project was cleared for construction.

Sanders says the trail will be an attraction for tourists who come to Vermont in the winter to snowmobile or ski and in the summer to bike and walk.
