BARRE TOWN ó Citing concern that all family members may not have been notified, Barre Town police would not identify a driver who was critically injured in a Wednesday afternoon accident at the intersection of Route 63 and Miller Road Extension.
Barre Town police have been in regular contact with the manís immediate family and said Thursday afternoon he was in intensive care at a hospital they did not name. But officials were not prepared to release his identity more than 24 hours after the car he was driving collided with a dump truck in a fiery accident that destroyed both vehicles.
Barre Town police did identify the driver of the dump truck, which was loaded with stone and heading up Route 63 toward Interstate 89 shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said the truck Dan Cheney was driving belonged to his family-owned company and burst into flames in the collision that closed Route 63 and interstate Exit 6 for four hours. Barre Town police did not provide an age or address for Cheney, who they said was not ďphysically hurt.Ē The accident remains under investigation.
Police said inspectors for the state Department of Motor Vehicles found nothing mechanically wrong with the remnants of the dump truck and that witnesses interviewed so far indicated the Toyota Avalon driven by the hospitalized man pulled off Miller Road Extension and into the path of the dump truck.
The carís driver was at least initially taken by Barre Town ambulance to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, police said. There were no passengers in either of the vehicles, they said.MORE IN This Just In
