PITTSFORD ó Vermont State Police are investigating a reported home invasion that involved an assault on a 15-year-old girl on Freeman Hill Drive.

Troopers, the county sheriff and paramedics were called to the short dirt road off Route 7 at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday after the girl, who police declined to identify, reported that she had been assaulted by an unknown man who entered her home, according to state police Detective Sgt. Albert Abdelnour.

The girl suffered minor injuries during the incident and was taken by ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Many details of the incident ó including the homeís street number ó werenít released Wednesday evening by police, who were still investigating the scene and trying to locate the intruder, Abdelnour said.

The detective said the intruder apparently entered the house, located close to three other homes, through an unlocked door. How the intruder encountered the girl and whether his intent was to burglarize the home or to assault its occupants is unclear and Abdelnour said he couldnít discuss those aspects of the case.

He said the girl didnít recognize the intruder but said police didnít know if the man entered the home at random.

ďItís under investigation whether this is random or targeted,Ē he said.

None of the other neighbors in the area reported any disturbances or missing items, Abdelnour said.

The intruder was gone when police arrived at Freeman Hill Drive and an exhaustive search of the nearby roads and Route 7 by officers and a canine from the Rutland Regional Sheriffís Department failed to locate the man.

Itís unknown if the man drove from the home or fled on foot.

ďResidents in that area should remain vigilant,Ē Abdelnour said.

The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s to early 30s. Police say he stands between 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin build, brown hair that hung down over his ears but not to his neck, brown eyes, thin lips, a bump on the bridge of his nose and short stubby facial hair. He was wearing a white tank top, black shorts worn low that hung below his knees, black tube socks pulled up to his knees and white latex gloves. The victim also described a black spiraling tattoo on his shoulder.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call state police at 773-9101.
