WATERBURY — Arthur Wayne “Smitty” Smith, of St. James City, Fla., formerly of Waterbury, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the age of 70.
Wayne was born April 1, 1943, in Andover, Mass., the son of Arthur Widdows and Phyllis (Zerbe) Smith. He was a graduate of Andover High School in Massachusetts and attended Northeastern College in Boston.
He moved to Vermont in the early 1960s. He married Patricia (Sabin) Harvey, of Waterbury, in 1966. They resided on Union Street in the village of Waterbury with their four children until 1978 and then moved to Barre, Vt. Years later, he remarried Sandra Smith, of Montpelier, and they relocated to St. James City, Fla., to the present day.
Wayne held a variety of jobs while living in Vermont. In the early years, he was employed by the Bolton Valley Ski Area as assistant operations manager. Over the years, he became a sales representative for Middlesex Fire Equipment, Reynolds and Son Construction Equipment, and Mack Trucking Co. in South Burlington. While living in Florida, he found employment with HONC Construction operating various pieces of heavy equipment (or as he liked to call them, “Tonka Toys”).
He was at one time a member of the Waterbury Fire Department and served as chief for a period of time. His hobbies included downhill skiing, fast cars and riding his Harley-Davidson. He also liked hunting and later enjoyed fishing in the waters of Florida.
Wayne is survived by his son Scott E. Smith and wife Cyndi, of Kernersville, N.C.; his son Dale S. Smith, of Barre, Vt.; his daughter Kelly A. Phillips and husband Scott, of East Montpelier, Vt.; daughter Kristine L. Angelico and husband Peter, of Parker, Colo.; his grandchildren, Brock and Alicia Phillips, Erin and Katie Smith, Alexander and Madison Angelico; his sister Jacqueline (Smith) Gaudet and husband John, of Andover, Mass.; and nephews Wayne Birch, Paul Birch and Stephen Gaudet. Wayne was preceded in death by his older sister, Barbara Smith.
A gathering of family and friends will take place Sept. 9, 2013, at the Montpelier Elks from 5 to 8 p.m. A small family memorial will be held later in the year at Tuckerman’s Ravine in New Hampshire.MORE IN ObituariesBARRE — Betty passed away at home in the comfort of her family on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016.
