    Be mindful of the bears

According to a recent story in The Times Argus, vehicle-bear collisions are on the increase in Vermont. It always depresses me to see dead animals on our roads and highways and makes me wonder if speed was a factor in the animalís demise.

I realize that many moose-car crashes are unavoidable, and this probably also applies to some of the bear-car collisions. But I would also guess that speed is frequently a factor in these incidents, just as it is often a factor in human-to-human car crashes.

So, I am urging everyone to slow down and thus give drivers a better chance to avoid these sad, costly collisions and also give the animals a better chance of getting out of the way.

Please practice defensive driving. It may save your life as well as that of a fellow creature.
